Ancients wargaming, i.e. from the dawn of civilisation until 1500AD, which seems to be the normal boundaries for rulesets.

Bit strapped for cash at the moment, so I am trying to concentrate on painting some of the inevitable lead pile that all wargamers have. Although this month, its not the lead pile, but the plastic pile. Specifically in this case some of the Wargames Factory Ceasar's Legions. I bought these over a year ago now when they first came out because some friends from the States were coming over so could bring them (at the time they hadn't announced any UK distributor).
My first reaction, like a lot of people's was disappointment - the plastic was very shiny and the detailing was fairly poor. This was their first kit and they obviously had a fair bit to learn (it appears from other reviews that they may have). However I gave them a quick spray with black paint and a lot more detail appeared at that point, so I painted a couple and then moved on, mainly because I couldn't decide whether to base them for DBMM, WAB or skirmish use.

First outing for my 25mm WAB Anglo Saxons and a bit of a disaster. 1500 point battle against Andy Madden's Carolignian. I took 3 large blocks of thegns/ceorls, each 40 strong in 5 ranks - 2 of thegns and 3 of ceorls, plus a unit of 16 vikings. Andy had a unit of mounted milites, a unit of milites on foot with archers, a small unit of vikings and a unit of Bretons.

Another army in the development stage is a WAB Anglo-Saxon army. Again this has come out of a role-playing requirement to have some figures for Vikings and Saxons, and somewhere along the line has turned into an entire WAB Shieldwall army. |

I have a bunch of Gripping Beast arab/andalusian 28mm figures that I have had knocking around, badly painted for a while. At point point I bought them for a role-playing campaign that died a death. I thought of turning them into a WAB arab army but was put off by the bumber of extra figures that I would need. I then based them up for DBM but andalusian seems a fairly rubbish army and I don't expect it to get much better under DBMM. Then the other day I was flicking through Beyond the Golden Gate (the Byzantine WAB sourcebook) and realised that this had some more interesting and varied arabic armies in it as well. Thus the latest of my strange projects is born, a quick repaint and rebase of my Andalusians to become wither an Aglahbid or later Abbasid army, with the possibility of fighting Dave's WAB Normans in an almost historical match-up. I will add pictures to the main part of this article as I start converting units. |

Dave seems to be able to paint very good figures very rapidly (although it turns out that he doesn't actually sleep), so here are his tips on flesh and horse painting.
