Polemos Napoleonic Rules Review

Play-test report on the Polemos Napoleonic rules, based on their Seven Years War rules. Initial impressions were that the rules are spectacularly badly laid out and proof-read, yet there might be some useable rules lurking in there...

David and myself tried a game of the Polemos Napoleonic Rules at the club. We found the rules to be very poorly laid out and badly proof-read, with a number of key sections and tables only available on the errata sheet, which is pretty poor for a £15 set of rules.

Because of the difficulty we had in working out what was going on, its difficult to say whether the rules are any good or not. If we had someone who knew them to explain them to us we might have faired better, but we found it almost impossible to sort out the sequence of actions that should happen in the various different kinds of combat. just a simple list of actions would have made the rules a lot easier.

My gut feeling is that there might be quite a good set of rules hidden in there, but at first play its difficult to find them. Maybe I can persuade David to try another game to see if we can find it. Possibly the Seven Years War version, on which these are based, is easier to understand and/or better proof-read, but I am reluctant to shell out £15 in case they are just as bad.

Some parts that we could understand did seem to work OK, especially the tempo system.
