Report of a test DBMM battle between a scratch Sassanid army and Dave's Early Imperial Romans.
The battle was somewhat constrained by being fought on my small (and oval) dining room table, which is what I will blame for the crusing defeat that I suffered.
In more detail, it was mainly caused by:
Low PIP dice, couple with immanouverable troops (the whole army was either Cv(S) or El(O). This meant that there were some turns where two commands didn't move at all. This meant that some of my attempts at co-ordinated attacks failed miserably, especially with the elephant/asawaran command, that was faced off by some hyper-mobile Ax(S). I wanted to threaten them with Cv(S) and hold back the El(O), but in the end I just couldn't get there in time and the El(O) went down in spades to the Ax(S).
Some grotty combat dice, especially in the centre where the Cv(S) went into a line of Cv(O) and Ax(S) and just bounced off, before getting lapped by more Ax(S) and killed. Here the extra PIP to move a Cv(S) not straight ahead, even if into contact, really plagued me compared to the Ax(S).
I had feigned flight but the C-in-C never had the occasion or the spare PIPs to use it.
Next time I think I might take half the asawaran as Cv(O), if that is still an option when the new Sassanid lists come out.
